About

Hi, I'm Monserrat, a Mexican economist and data scientist who believes technology should help everyone, not just a few. I started working with data when I was studying economics in Mexico. That opened the door for me to work in Mexican think tanks and non-profits, analyzing public problems such as crime, public safety, justice reform, and human rights. I collaborated on different projects building data pipelines and turning them into policy reports, which taught me how powerful data can be when it's used with purpose and care.

Thanks to the Data for Good Scholarship, in 2023 I moved to Berlin for the Master of Data Science for Public Policy at the Hertie School, where I specialised in digital governance and AI policy. My thesis estimated the energy consumption and environmental impacts of data centres in the EU, and I worked at the Weizenbaum Institute, collaborating on research into AI infrastructure and Big Tech's environmental claims. I keep pulling on that thread: the value chains behind AI and the digital economy, and how to build technology that serves people.

Along the way, my friend Luisa and I co-founded Hijas de Internet (Daughters of the Internet), a women's collective advocating for digital spaces that are safer, more diverse, and inclusive, especially in Mexico and the Global South. What started as a podcast grew into six seasons, workshops, research, and open-source tools in Spanish, recognised with the Latin America Digital Democracy Award in 2023. My interests sit at the intersection of digital rights, the responsible development of AI technologies, and sharing how to use these systems critically and for the social good.
